Back in 2019, a customer brought his AMF jet boat to Marine Power Systems after the failure of its MAN D0836 diesel engine due to seawater ingress through the exhaust. His original intention was to rebuild the engine and get the boat back on the water.

As with every major engine failure, we completely stripped the engine and carried out a thorough inspection to determine the extent of the damage. Unfortunately, the results weren't encouraging. The engine required extensive replacement parts and significant labour, making the rebuild difficult to justify financially.

After reviewing the options, the owner decided that a complete repower would provide far better long-term value.

Finding the Right Replacement

The original MAN engine produced 450 horsepower, so any replacement needed to deliver comparable performance without compromising reliability.

The biggest challenge was the engine room itself. The available space was extremely limited, eliminating many of the engines that would normally be considered for this application.

After assessing the vessel, we recommended the FPT N67-450.

The N67 proved to be an ideal solution, not only because it matched the required power output, but because its dimensions suited the engine bay almost perfectly.

An Installation That Couldn't Have Been Better

Sometimes the right engine simply fits.

The FPT N67-450 required only minimal modifications to the vessel, making it one of the most straightforward repower projects we've completed.

Some of the installation advantages included:

  • Existing engine mount locations could be retained
  • Exhaust outlet aligned with the original installation
  • Existing Hamilton jet unit coupled directly to the new engine
  • Minimal structural modifications required

By avoiding extensive fabrication work, we were able to keep the installation efficient while preserving the original layout of the vessel.

Proven Over Thousands of Hours

A successful repower isn't measured on launch day — it's measured by years of dependable service.

Since the installation was completed in 2019, the owner has accumulated more than 1,000 operating hours on the FPT N67-450.

Throughout that time, the engine has delivered reliable performance with no major issues, proving the value of selecting the right engine from the beginning. The owner now enjoys modern diesel performance, dependable reliability and the confidence to put the boat to work whenever it's needed.

Considering a Diesel Repower?

When an engine suffers a major failure, rebuilding isn't always the most economical solution. A modern diesel repower can often provide greater reliability, improved fuel efficiency and lower long-term operating costs.

At Marine Power Systems, we assess every vessel individually to determine the best outcome for your budget, your boat and the way you use it. Whether it's an inboard shaft drive, sterndrive or Hamilton jet-powered vessel, we can recommend and install the right engine package to keep you on the water for years to come.
