Steyr diesel Repower
Marine Power Systems provided engineering support to replace two aging Steyr MO256H45 engines installed in a commercial work vessel.
Due to the fantastic reliability of the old Steyr engines throughout the previous 15 years, the vessel owner decided to install two brand new Steyr SE286E40 engines each rated at 280hp. The new models were chosen for their increased horsepower, decreased fuel burn and improved emissions standards whilst maintaining compatibility with the existing engine mounting points.
The work was completed over the course of 4 weeks with the old engines being removed from the vessel and replaced with the new units. Remote mounted oil filters, fuel filters and fuel pumps were incorporated to allow for easier servicing in the tight engine bays. The old engines were serviced and on-sold for many more years of operation in a private vessel.
The opportunity was also taken to complete annual servicing on the Mercruiser Bravo II stern drives with the steering arm, seals and bellows all being replaced with new.
During the sea trial the vessel reached 38 knots; a significant increase over previous, with remarkably reduced fuel consumption at cruise speed.
Needless to say, the owners were very happy with their investment and immediately put the vessel to work in the Hauraki Gulf.
