About us…

WHO WE ARE…

Marine Power Systems Ltd is a family owned business founded in 2013 to provide specialist diesel and propulsion technical services in New Zealand and the South Pacific. We have a vast experience with various types of vessels and machinery, always taking pride in providing professional and honest service.

The road has been a long one and our company is a culmination of many years of experience, learning and of course the odd mistake!

OUR STORY…

Marine Power Systems was established by Rob Baldwin, an experienced Marine Engineer with a background in Naval and commercial marine vessels.

Rob has been involved with heavy diesel engines and propulsion systems for his entire working life and you could say they have become a passion of his. It all started when, as a young man, he signed up to an apprenticeship with the Royal Navy. At the time, the navy was going through a technical revolution and the old gas thirsty ships of old were steadily being replaced with modern (at the time!) diesel-electric propulsion plants. These ships were traditionally powered by Ruston, Mirrlees Blackstone and Paxman YJ and RPA series diesel engines and although they have now been long-since superseded, they were at the time, extremely powerful and compact engines. During the next few years Rob became to know these engines intimately inside and out, and performed many major maintenance intervals in-house such as top and bottom end overhauls.

Time has since moved on and the YJ’s and RPA’s have mostly been replaced with modern diesel engines from manufacturers such as Volvo Penta, Cummins and MAN. These engines and emissions control devices brought a new level of complexity to the industry that few companies were equipped to support.

There appeared to be a lack of specialist marine propulsion knowledge in New Zealand and on too many occasions, we observed poor workmanship and inaccurate diagnosis carried out by various organisations. Unfortunately, the persons involved were often wearing a reputable uniform and this led most people to believe they were receiving a good service.

This experience proved to be the foundations for our company and in 2013, we started to offer quality technical inspection, diagnostics and repair services for many of the large fleet operators in New Zealand. As strong advocates of modern workshop equipment and technical training, we believe that with the right blend of performance monitoring, non-intrusive inspection and intelligent maintenance scheduling, huge benefits to performance and reliability can be realised. Our customers have since experienced this for themselves.

Fast-forward to today and we have completed many thousands of projects ranging from mega-yachts to outboard repowers. We are one of the few marine businesses that are flexible enough to work on commercial vessels, recreational boats and industrial equipment such as generators.

We often work alongside ships crews and vessel owners and are more than happy to assist with training and pass on our knowledge to your team.

Throughout the years we have added many new services to our offerings to complement our core diesel work. These include laser shaft alignment, electronic engine diagnostics, in-situ shaft power measurements and fuel injection system testing and overhaul.

In 2020, we took over distributor responsibilities for Steyr Motors in New Zealand, having already amassed a huge amount of experience on these engines during our military experience.

In 2023 we signed full dealership agreements for Suzuki outboard motors, Volvo Penta commercial and industrial products plus a service agreement for Doosan Infracore commercial engines, FPT diesels and Zenith-Isuzu power generators.

Our workshop is conveniently situated next to the brand-new Kopu Marine Precinct, featuring an 80m commercial wharf, 100ton haul-out facilities plus a recreational boat ramp. We also have a small workshop located inside the Whangamata marina hard stand area. This facility provides a maintenance and repair base for all vessels on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsular.

So that’s a brief introduction to our company and where we come from. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. We hope to meet you soon.
