MCLAY 680 REPOWER WITH NEW SUZUKI 200HP OUTBOARD

Marine Power Systems recently completed a Suzuki outboard repower on a Mclay 680, upgrading the vessel from its original Suzuki DF200TX to the latest generation Suzuki DF200AP. The original engine had delivered an exceptional 20 years of reliable service, providing the owners with the performance, dependability, and confidence they expected from a Suzuki outboard.

With such a positive ownership experience, the decision to remain with Suzuki was an easy one. The new Suzuki DF200AP continues the legacy of the original engine while introducing a range of modern technologies designed to enhance performance, efficiency, and the overall boating experience.

The repower has provided the Mclay 680 owners with improved fuel efficiency, smoother operation, and a more advanced driving experience thanks to Suzuki’s electronic throttle and shift controls. The updated Suzuki digital display also provides clearer engine information and improved monitoring, making it easier for the owners to manage and understand their vessel’s performance.

A key advantage of the new DF200AP is Suzuki’s Lean Burn technology — an intelligent fuel management system that continuously analyses operating conditions and adjusts the air-to-fuel mixture for optimum efficiency. During steady cruising conditions, the system automatically delivers a leaner fuel mixture, helping reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% compared with conventional fuel systems. This means longer range, reduced running costs, and more time enjoying the water between refuelling stops.

As part of the upgrade, Marine Power Systems also replaced the boat’s existing chartplotter/sounder and transducer with a modern marine electronics package. The new system provides improved sonar performance, clearer underwater imaging, and more accurate depth information, giving the owners greater confidence when navigating, fishing, and exploring new areas. Updating the electronics at the same time as the repower ensured the Mclay 680 was upgraded as a complete package, combining modern engine technology with improved onboard capability.

By choosing to repower their Mclay 680 with a new Suzuki DF200AP, the owners have retained the reliability they valued from their original Suzuki while gaining the benefits of modern outboard technology, improved efficiency, and enhanced performance. This project highlights the long-term value of a quality Suzuki outboard and the benefits of completing a professional boat repower with Marine Power Systems.

A few words from the owner...

Everything is going really well with the new motor thanks, and we are very happy with the 20” prop. From a fuel economy perspective, we are achieving 1.0 -1.2 L/Nm dependent on sea state, for a speed range of 21.5 – 24 knots, fully loaded, which we think is very good. We have even seen it pop below 1.0 L/Nm when cruising along at 23 knots with medium load and a small sea state.

One of the game changers was you lifting the mounting height up as much as you did. It definitely changed the way the boat handles i.e. it doesn’t require as much trim tab to balance out the lean which was previously quite sensitive on the McLay 680 and it gets up on the plane so easily.
