Mustang 3200 Repower: Volvo Penta D3 Replacement with Twin Steyr Engines
Replacing Failed Volvo Penta D3 Engines with a Reliable Modern Propulsion System

When the owner of this Mustang 3200 began experiencing repeated engine failures and reliability issues, the decision was made to move away from the original Volvo Penta D3-190 engine package and invest in a complete repower solution.
The Mustang 3200 had originally been fitted with twin Volvo Penta D3-190 diesel engines. After both engines suffered failures, the owner invested more than $70,000 into repairs and component replacement in an attempt to restore reliability.
Unfortunately, despite the significant investment, the issues continued. Ongoing breakdowns, fault codes and limp mode events meant the vessel was still unreliable and the owner was unable to enjoy the boat with confidence.
After seeking specialist advice, the decision was made that a full repower was the best long-term solution.

The Repower Solution
Marine Power Systems removed the original Volvo Penta D3 engines and completed a complete propulsion upgrade, installing:
- Twin Steyr SE236E40 6-cylinder marine diesel engines
- Twin MerCruiser Bravo 3 sterndrives
- New engine integration and commissioning
- Full sea trial and performance testing
The repower was completed at the Kōpū Marine Precinct, with the owner travelling from Auckland to have the work carried out by the Marine Power Systems team.
Why Steyr Was Selected as a Volvo Penta D3 Replacement
The Volvo Penta D3 platform is a popular engine package, but some owners have experienced significant reliability issues as these engines age, particularly when major failures occur and repair costs begin to escalate.
For this Mustang 3200, the Steyr SE236E40 was selected as an ideal replacement due to its compact design, performance characteristics and suitability for sterndrive applications.
The Steyr 6-cylinder engine offers:
- A compact footprint suitable for repower applications
- Strong performance and torque characteristics
- Excellent reliability
- Modern marine diesel technology
- Reduced complexity compared with repairing ageing engines
Although slightly longer than the original Volvo Penta D3, the Steyr package provided an excellent fit within the existing engine space with careful planning and installation.
Performance Results
The completed repower transformed the Mustang 3200 into a reliable and high-performing vessel.
Following sea trials, the results included:
- Top speed exceeding 35 knots
- Cruise speed of 24 knots
- Fuel consumption of approximately 2 litres per nautical mile
- Smooth and reliable operation
- Improved confidence for extended boating
The new propulsion package delivered the performance expected from the Mustang hull while providing the reliability required by the owner.

The Importance of Specialist Repower Advice
This project highlights an important consideration for boat owners facing major engine failures.
While repairing an existing engine can sometimes be the correct option, repeated repairs on ageing or problematic engines can quickly become a costly cycle without addressing the underlying issue.
In this case, more than $70,000 was spent attempting to repair the original Volvo Penta D3 engines. Around ten years later, the complete repower investment was approximately $120,000 and provided the owner with a reliable, modern propulsion system designed for many more years of service.
The right advice at the beginning of the process can help owners make better decisions and avoid spending significant money on repairs that may not provide a long-term solution.
